SPRING PLAY - COMPETITION PIECEUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

April 29 & 30th and May 1st 2nd  6, 7, 8, and 9

Competition Piece by John Wells is a hilarious comedy that tells the story of three different high schools rehearsing for and performing in a high school play competition. Each individual play within this play is unique and driven by equally unique drama teacher personalities whose artistic visions are as bizarre as their methods. The preppy ensemble, directed by Mrs. Hockenschmoss, presents a zero to hero type of play where the nerdy boy wins the girl next door by standing up to the school bully in Kiss Me Quick My Lips Are on Fire: The artsy ensemble, led by Ms Mellancamp, presents an over the top epic, King Lear, a one hour, one act version in the style of grand Kabuki theatre, performed in Japanese. Unfortunately, neither the teacher nor the cast actually speak Japanese: Finally, the Metal-head ensemble, directed by demoted girl’s football coach, Mr. Stan Grabowski, presents Betty, the ultimate angst ridden teen tragedy, about a young pregnant high school cheerleader, who is thrown onto the streets by her parents, gives birth in a dumpster, becomes addicted to drugs, commits suicide by throwing herself in front of a bus and finally comes back from the dead to warn teens about the dangers of succumbing to the temptations of sex and drugs. Written by the lead metal-head actress, Betty, despite its many serious issues, is in fact a comedy. The festival adjudicators, a little old school teacher, a retired film critic and the Grim Reaper, along with the host school’s librarian provide a running commentary of both the twisted process in the first act and the actual performances of the plays themselves in the second act.  Tickets are $8.00 for students and seniors and $10.00 for adults. Doors open at 7:00 pm show starts at 7:30 pm.

Terry Fox Donation CampaignUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

This year, students at Dr. Charles Best are hoping to raise $20 000 for the Terry Fox Foundation.  On Friday September 12th, our Best Buddies and Leadership students hosted a school wide assembly to launch our school goal and outline the fundraising campaign.  Guest speaker, Anna Solnickova, shared her story of overcoming cancer during her grade 12 year and spoke of the inspirational role Terry Fox has played in her life.

From September 12th through September 26th all students will participate in a period 2 challenge, collecting pledges from family, friends and employers. Classes that place in the top five will win lunch for the class donated by local businesses.  Every student that brings in a donation will also be entered in a raffle for door prizes.  Stainless steel water bottles are also available for $12 each, with all proceeds benefiting the Terry Fox foundation.

In addition, twenty five of our teachers and administrators have volunteered to have their picture placed on the front of glass jars.  Students can donate coins to the jars for two weeks.  The teacher who has the most money in their jar will volunteer to KISS A GOAT at our wrap up assembly on Friday September 26th.  At this assembly we will announce our total amount raised, draw for door prizes and watch the teacher kiss the goat!  After the assembly, all staff and students will participate in the National School Terry Fox Run.

If you would like to help us reach our goal, please go to www.terryfoxrun.org and click on 'Donate Here' in the bottom left corner.  Choose Dr Charles Best from the list of schools participating.  You will also have the opportunity to add a students name if you wish, which will count in our period 2 competition. You will be issued an instant tax receipt.

Parents are welcome to join us for the assembly and school wide run on Friday, September 26.   If you would like more information please conact Kristi Blakeway at the school.
